LAKE WORTH-An exhibition of works by the late artist, Perdro Carlos Ortiz.
Ortiz ws a master of many media, possessed an extraordinary sensitivity and simplicity. His works capture the great love he devoted to his beloved homeland, a place he never abandoned in his heart and mind.
SNEAK PEEK
The eclectic style of artist Pedro Carlos Ortiz transports the viewer on a journey from the working class neighborhoods of mid-twentieth century Cuba to the sun-splashed streets of Madrid. Using surreal oils and inks, he conjures the rituals and mysticism of healers and mediums who practiced a mix of indigenous African religions and Roman Catholicism, while conversely, he employs bright colors and bold strokes to evoke the purity and spirituality of the Madonna and San Rafael.
Highly collected, the paintings of Perdo C. Ortiz are found in prominent collections in the United States and abroad.
Among the collectors of Ortiz' works are:
The Cuban Museum, Miami FL
OAS (Organization of American States) Museum of Latin Art
Radio Marti, Private Collection of Jose Antonio Font.

History:
Pedro Carlos Ortiz was born in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, on October 20, 1932. He began his university studies in architecture at the University of Havana. In 1964, he left his homeland as a political exile and headed to Madrid, Spain, where he finished his studies and received a Doctorate in Architecture.
"What I paint are images and shadows that emerge from within me and that become realities."
-- P. C. Ortiz
" I collected Pedro for over 10 years and have a collection of 15 painting
hanging in my home. I love the magic they add to my walls and my collection".
--Evy Baird Willis, Private Collector of Cuban Art and French Post Impressionist Art.

Excerpt from letter from the Estate of Pedro Carlos Ortiz to Rolando Chang Barrero.
begin his series on Cuban Masters from the early Vanguard to the Present.
Although my husband was a successful architect, as well as, a fine artist here in the United States I can honestly say his art gave him his greatest satisfaction. Pedro Loved creating and
sharing his art with as many as possible.
He was honored in his lifetime with several awards and Honors but there was not greater accomplishment to him than to place his paintings and acquire new Collectors. I am certain that Pedro would be thrilled to introduce his work to a new audience in Palm Beach County. Again I thank Rolando for this great opportunity and Homage".--Irma Ortiz, wife of the late Perdro Carlos Ortiz

Today in the News: Lake Worth and Boynton Beach Events Mentioned in SunSentinel Article
Sun Sentinel, Jan Engoren jengoren@tribune.com
Coming up this month in celebration of Gay Pride and Women's History Month are two art exhibits and a fundraiser for the Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center in Lake Worth.
Hosted by Boynton Beach Arts District founder and artist Rolando Chang Barrero and his gallery, ActivistArtistA Gallery, and sponsored in part by Noor Blazekovic of Irreversible Magazine, the events showcase local talent and support activities and organizations within the community.
"This is a powerful exhibit incorporating all people of color and gender," Barrero said. "I'm excited about the show. As a curator, and as an artist, I'm in the best position to support both the community and my fellow artists."
"My work reflects the changes I would like to see in the world," he said. "I'm not one to call for change, education or enlightenment when I can initiate it."
On March 25, in conjunction with the Pride Business Alliance and Pridefest 2015 in Lake Worth, the show Erotica 2015 opens at Barrero's fine art gallery in Lake Worth. (Rolando Chang Barrero Fine Art Gallery,711 Lucern Avenue, Lake Worth Florida)
Featuring photographs by Joanne Urban and Miami photographer Ali Miranda, known for his nudes, the show also includes paintings, sculptures and works by Boynton Beach artist Allison Kotzig and Orlando Chiang.
Chiang's mixed-media sculpture, inspired by his reaction to gender stereotypes, "Domestication," depicting a human bust with a collar and chain around his or her neck, was featured at ArtPalm Beach last January.

Boynton Beach Art District, 422 West Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach, Florida
On March 26, in conjunction with the Boynton Beach Art District monthly artwalk, Barrero is featuring a multi-media event and benefit with an exhibit titled Girls' School: A Political Disregard of a Gender, along with live music, open mic and spoken word poetry, and special presentation by Katherine Murphy of Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center.
Featured artists include: Dianne Rosenberg; Abby Funk; singer/songwriter Alana DaCosta; spoken word poets Niki Lopez and Chunky; and Kotzig with part of the proceeds going to AVDA.
Kotzig lives part time in Boynton Beach and the rest of the year in Slovakia, where she runs a permaculture farm and small inn with her husband.
In her artist statement, Kotzig said, "My work is strongly feminist, examining and highlighting undercurrents of misogyny in our culture."
"We came together as women to highlight issues of gender inequality, gender violence and to create a creative space for us to express ourselves as women," she said. "It's an invitation to the community to look beneath the surface of what is called 'gender politics' and engage in dialogue."
Highlighting subjects relating to women, including pay disparity, violence and transgender issues, Kotzig said the event is the first of its kind in the arts, with the inclusion of transgender and cisgender artists (people who are not transgender).
The installation poses the question: "Are we are still falling short of the goal of true equality in today's politically charged climate?"
To celebrate the new marriage equality law in Florida, Compass will sponsor an officiated marriage ceremony along the waterfront.
The brunch is a fundraiser for Compass and spokesperson Ryanmarie Rice said, "We're grateful to the city of Lake Worth and to Rolando for the support of our mission."
To reserve your spot for the marriage officiation, email events@compassglcc.com.

About the Artists:
Joanne Urban:
Twenty-five years ago, on the way to another profession, Joanne Urban discovered
photography quite by accident. Needing an art elective, she somehow signed up for
Photography 101, fell into the dektol, and never looked back.
While her formal training began with film and the wet darkroom, she now utilizes digital
capture and Photoshop in the digital darkroom. Joanne creates in-camera images with
her assorted digital cameras and camera-less images with her flat bed scanner. Her
work reflects the aesthetic of the traditional black and white darkroom processes. Drawn
to detail, simple composition, texture and pattern, her imagery is a visual and emotional
response to the commonplace.
Ali Miranda:
Greatly known for his erotic nudes, Ali's work is often featured in both local an national publications, covering a broad spectrum in the photography field from commercial to fine-art. A native of the Miami area, Ali established himself as a photo artist in South Beach during the late 80s and up to the present.
He holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Arts College of San Francisco and also attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and Chicago.
Ali's work has been exhibit in various galleries, and collected by many buyers around the world.
Orlando Chiang:
I have always felt compelled to communicate my views regarding the human condition.
The human figure has always been the central focal point of my work. My objective as an artist is to convey visually what is inside the mind, and the influence of society on the individual. My sculpture is an investigation into materials, and how they interact and juxtapose each other.
It is my hope that the viewer will join me in delving deeper into the human psyche through the medium of sculpture.
My work is strongly feminist, examining and highlighting undercurrents of misogyny in our culture. Humour, toys and iconography are used to examine, ridicule, and expose how concepts of ‘other’ have been used to pigeonhole and isolate over the centuries. I use sex store vaginas as media, which in itself is a discussion on the reductionist tendencies of our culture.
